Two significant opportunities for savings are Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) and CO Sensors (carbon monoxide).
- Many HVAC-R systems operate via motors that run at full capacity all the time, making them inefficient and generating waste. VFDs can be installed on these motors to reduce their operational capacity in non-peak hours, and can save up to 50%of drive use.
- All subterranean parking structured are required by law to have exhaust fans that pump out the carbon monoxide produced by vehicles and pump in oxygen. However, most fans run continuously. During non-peak hours, these exhaust fans do not need to run at 100% capacity. CO sensors turn fans on only when levels of CO in the air are approaching unsafe levels, saving significant energy. CO sensors can save up to 95% of fan energy use.
